Features

How to write a cover letter

A strong cover letter is short - under one page - and specific to the job. Four paragraphs is plenty:

  • Opening: the role you're applying for and why you want to work at this company in particular
  • Proof: one or two achievements that show you can do the job, with numbers where possible
  • Fit: what you'd bring to their team, product or customers
  • Close: thank them and say you'd welcome a conversation

Cover letter format

Start with your name and contact details, then the date and the recipient's name, title, company and address. Add a subject line naming the role, greet the reader by name if you can find it, and end with a sign-off such as 'Sincerely' or 'Kind regards' followed by your name.

Use the same design as your resume. A matching letterhead looks polished and makes your application easy to recognise.

Mistakes to avoid

Don't repeat your resume line by line - pick the highlights that matter for this role. Avoid 'To whom it may concern' when a name is easy to find. Don't send the same letter to every company; change at least the opening and the fit paragraph. And proofread: a typo in a cover letter is remembered.

Do I still need a cover letter?

Not every application asks for one, but many recruiters still read them - especially for smaller companies, career changes, or when you're explaining a gap or a move to a new city. When the job posting asks for one, a tailored letter can be what sets you apart from similar resumes.

Frequently asked questions

Is this cover letter builder free?

Yes. Every design and PDF download is free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limits. It's open source and made by Srutved.

Will my cover letter match my resume?

Yes. Each of the 15 designs matches the resume template of the same name. If you copy your details from a resume made with our resume builder, its design is selected automatically.

How long should a cover letter be?

Under one page: three or four short paragraphs, about 250 to 400 words. Hiring managers skim, so lead with your strongest point.

Who should I address my cover letter to?

The hiring manager by name if you can find it on the job posting, the company website or LinkedIn. Otherwise 'Dear Hiring Manager' is a safe, professional choice.

Where are my cover letters stored?

Only in your own browser, on your device. Nothing is uploaded to a server. Clearing your browser data removes them, so keep a copy of your PDF.
